| How can you get help with your heating bill?
The Energy Assistance
Program can help people who are having trouble keeping up
with their heating bills.
If
your heat has been turned off,
first call (800) 242-9137 to talk to your utility about a
payment plan.
The average amount you
can get is about $330 for heat and $100 for electricity.
You may be eligible
for Energy Assistance if your family has made less than this
in the last three months:

The
Energy Assistance Program takes applications beginning in October and until May 15.

When you go, take along proof of income for the last three months (like pay stubs) and
Social Security cards for everyone in your household, your current energy bill, and (if you rent) a statement from your landlord that
says if heat is included in your rent.
